It’s the dog days of summer but that doesn’t mean you don’t need hot water in your house. With your hot water heater stowed away in a corner of your cellar or in a closet, it can be hard to tell when something is amiss. However, there are some signs your hot water heater will give that indicate it’s time to call for help:
It’s making a lot of noise.
Your hot water heater should be just about silent; the only noise you may hear is the gas burner working if that’s how your hot water heater heats. Noises like banging, buzzing or other odd sounds mean something is wrong and it’s time to call for help.
The water isn’t hot enough.
You count on your hot water heater to provide the hot water you need. If it isn’t doing its job, there’s a problem. Whether you are experiencing tepid water all the time, or the water varies between warm and cool, you need to an expert to repair the problem.
There are little pieces of white plastic in your water.
If you have a tank hot water heater, it has a component called a dip tube. The dip tube is a narrow, long plastic tube that connects directly to the cold water intake valve at the top of the tank and stretches to about 8 inches from the bottom. This tube directs all the incoming cold water to the bottom. Sometimes the dip tube can break or the plastic can break down, leading to small particles entering the flow of your hot water. Dip tubes need to be replaced once they’ve broken.
