A Bigger Air Conditioner Is Not a Better Option

When you’re searching for a new air conditioner, there are a lot of different factors to check out on the label. You might notice an ENERGY STAR seal, the governmental seal of approval that this system uses as little energy as possible without suffering in performance and cooling output. You might also find the SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio), a number noting the specific efficiency rating of a system. And you should be able to find out the size of the air conditioner, in tons or BTUs per hour.

The trouble with a small AC

If you get an air conditioner that is too small for the size of your home, there are some obvious reasons why it might not work. An air conditioner that is too small would have a lot of trouble cooling down the room. Though it might cost less, it was not designed for such a large space. You will likely feel less comfortable than you should, and the system can become overworked.

What if you get a larger one?

Just to be sure, you decide it might be a better idea to get a larger air conditioner so that your home is properly cooled. However, if you go too large, you can run into just as much trouble!

There is only one air conditioner size that is the right choice for your home. The size of the rooms, the amount of space you have altogether, the layout of your HVAC system, the amount and placement of windows, and the number of people in your home all may contribute to the calculation a technician makes to determine the sizing of your air conditioner.

The air conditioner is engineered for a certain cooling load in order to sufficiently cool a room and have optimal cycling periods that keep your air conditioner operating smoothly. When you have a room smaller than what the AC was designed for, it runs for shorter cycles. The air conditioner shuts off frequently and turns on often as well, and this makes the air conditioner’s components wear down quickly.
